National Holidays
The national holidays in Turkey are public holidays. The authorities may extend these holidays depending on their proximity to the weekend.
Here are the national holidays in Turkey:
- New Year’s Day (Yılbaşı) — January 1
- Celebrates the start of the new year.
- National Sovereignty and Children’s Day (Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı) — April 23
- Commemorates the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 1920. It is also a holiday dedicated to children.
- Labor and Solidarity Day (Emek ve Dayanışma Günü) — May 1
- Celebrates workers and labor movements.
- Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day (Atatürk’ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı) — May 19
- Honors the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence in 1919, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The holiday is also dedicated to youth and sports.
- Democracy and National Unity Day (Demokrasi ve Milli Birlik Günü) — July 15
- Commemorates the victims of the 2016 coup attempt and celebrates democracy.
- Victory Day (Zafer Bayramı) — August 30
- Celebrates the victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922, during the Turkish War of Independence.
- Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı) — October 29
- Marks the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
